The Sound Check Music Show featuring The Slow Readers Club, Pale Waves and Slydigs

Music TV programmes are a dying breed. If you take away the major label fodder that is Later With Jools, there's very little at all. The Sound Check is a new Dock 10 production out of Media City that is trying to reverse that trend and champion new artists. Its pilot episode featuring The Slow Readers Club, Pale Waves and Slydigs and presented by 6 Music's Chris Hawkins and one of our favourite local artists in her own right Little Sparrow, aka Katie Ware, has just been released.

The show features one full song from each of the artists involved with a chat with each of them led by Chris and Katie and snippets from a second song. Chris has a long record of championing new music away from his day job at 6 Music, we recall many great nights at The Old Queens Head in Islington when we lived in London, where he put on many emerging talents that were not getting picked up by mainstream radio, and, in The Slow Readers Club, Pale Waves and Sly Digs, the show aims to do just that. Add to the mix the infectious bubbly persona of Katie and they're a great team to lead a music show, finding out more about the bands between songs but also injecting some fun and humour into it.

The Slow Readers Club performed I Saw A Ghost and Forever In Your Debt, two of their breakthrough songs, as well as front man Aaron talking about his lyrical inspirations as well as laughing and joking about their dance moves.

Pale Waves, another Manchester band, play their insanely infectious track The Tide and its follow-up Heavenly which announced them last year. They talk about their desire to make people dance, their dislike of having to set up and reveal love of some interesting bands you wouldn't expect.

Slydigs from Warrington provide a real contrast to those two, a sign of the diversity that The Sound Check is aiming for. They trade in big in-your-face, "proper" as Chris describes it, rock music, like the songs Stiff Upper Lip and Love That Keeps On Giving that they play, both of which have riffs that sticks in your head immediately. They talk about supporting The Who and their rock and roll influences.
