Cuecliché's debut EP One Last Chance is an adrenalin-fuelled headrush that takes no prisoners across its five tracks, but beneath which lurks intriguing melodies and real crossover potential.
Opening track A Song For Charlie is a two minute forty blast that recalls the urgent punk pop energy that got us so excited about Ash's early singles twenty years ago. It's that raw boundless yet targeted anger burning at the core of the simple raw guitar, bass and drums that makes this record jump out of the page.
Across the EP this ethos shines through on each track, but the use of co-vocalists and their love of traditional verse chorus verse structures make it a very accessible listen without diluting their punk-leaning credentials. 10th July's call and response vocals take centre stage to impressive effect as the song builds its momentum like an unstoppable juggernaut.
Lost Boys Anthem feels just like its title, the verses musing about not being ready to give up the high life, purposefully declaring "Just not yet, there's no rush, life can wait, I will grow up one day" while Crazy Little Princess mixes more traditional punk-styled riffs with at first contradictory yet eventually complementary vocal harmonies.
The EP concludes with the title track, another urgent shifting ball of energy in the verse that opens up into a defiantly big and unashamedly widescreen chorus that suggests Cuecliché are not going to settle for a life of playing small venues for too long. On the basis of these five songs they might get their wish.
Cuecliché play Liverpool Zanzibar this Saturday 25th March and two London shows at The Good Ship on April 8th and Fiddler's Elbow on May 14th.
