Danny Mahon - Interview

Most Mancunians with their ear to the ground will know of Danny Mahon. For years he's played to packed out venues, picked up some impressive support slots and written songs that capture the spirit and the ups and downs of living in our home town. He's been quiet for a couple of years but is coming back with a headline show later this month and a set of new songs in tow. We caught up with him for a chat to find out more.

For years Danny Mahon was one of the city's unsung musical heroes, always guaranteed to pack out venues with every gig an event with crowds singing back every word of his unreleased songs. He's taken a break for a while, but has made his first tentative steps back with the release of a home demo recording of a track called Gimme Back My Time.

Sunday was the final day of Kendal Calling. Stuart Ralston toured the site and reports back from sets ranging to Noel Gallagher on the main stage to an impromptu set by Danny Mahon in a field, catching up with Puppet Rebellion, Space Monkeys and Riding The Low on the way and a sad tale of a lack of mashed potato to go with his pie.

To commemorate the loss of music icon David Bowie in January, Ben Taylor of Sound Control came up with the great idea of an all-day event to commemorate the great man's work as well as to raise funds for Christies with Manchester bands and solo artists taking on the task of covering his songs and putting their own spin on them. As we had other gig commitments later, we only caught the afternoon session, but managed to see Sam Carson of Lunar, a welcome return for Danny Mahon and a four-song set from The Slow Readers Club.

Manchester Dogs Home Charity Fundraiser

Following the tragic fire at Manchester Dogs Home on Friday night, the £1m donations in twenty-four hours made news worldwide.  To show support locally a benefit gig has been arranged by Manchester venue bosses, managers, DJs and artists to take place at Sound Control on Sunday 21st September.
