The Miserable Rich - Overcome

It's twelve years since The Miserable Rich's last album Miss You In The Days and in an era where bands make comebacks theirs was one of the most unlikely. It took tragedy, in the shape of the death of front man James de Malplaquet and his wife Sarah's first child and the healing powers of friendship, pizza and beer to get them back together in a room, initially to play a charity fundraiser and then to play around with ideas for new music. Overcome is the product of how those meetings played out, the sound of a band reconnecting with each other, recalling everything special about the band in their first incarnation but now laced with the wisdom of age and experience, new musical discoveries and a sense of purpose that the record needed to be made.

TRACK OF THE DAY : The Miserable Rich - FHS

FHS is the second single to be taken from The Miserable Rich's forthcoming album Overcome which will be released digitally on December 1st and physically in February 2024. A reinvention of an old track criminally hidden away on the b-side of their standalone single Anything's Possible, the band are sounding as fresh and strong as ever.

TRACK OF THE DAY : The Miserable Rich - Glue

The Miserable Rich return after a decade-long hiatus with a new single Glue, a deeply personal song to front man James de Malplaquet and his wife Sarah about the loss of their first son and the impact it had on their lives.

The Miserable Rich - Interview

The Miserable Rich are one of our favourite bands ever and they were the first band that I ever reviewed for a blog.  They dispersed at the end of 2012 after three albums, but have recently announced four shows in Germany and Austria.  We spoke to front man James de Malplaquet about the shows and what the future might hold for them.

The Miserable Rich - Live In Frankfurt / Covers

The Miserable Rich are back with a double album - a live album recorded in Frankfurt on their 2012 tour and an album of cover versions recorded over the past six years.  Hopefully this and their recent short tour of Germany and Austria are a precursor to them getting back in the studio and on the road.

The Miserable Rich - Hannover Feinkost Lampe - 16th November 2014

The Miserable Rich are one of our favourite bands and since they took a break in 2012, we've been nagging them to get back together.  We weren't the only ones it seems as they announced four dates in Germany and Austria.  Inga B very kindly offered to review the opening night at Hannover's Feinkost Lampe.

The Miserable Rich - Cologne Stadtgarten Studio 672 - 12th February 2012

The Miserable Rich

Cologne Stadtgarten Studio 672

12th February 2012

The Miserable Rich are a curious phenomenon. Having released their third album last year, they're still struggling to make a major breakthrough in the UK despite gathering a loyal but small following, whilst their contemporaries such as The Leisure Society get critical plaudits and festival and prestigious support slots. In contrast, on the Continent, they've built on momentum from their early releases to the extent they can go on a month long tour of Germany, Austria and Switzerland, and, despite the double-digit minus temperatures and the fact it's Sunday evening, come close to filling venues like Studio 672 in Cologne.
