TRACK OF THE DAY : The Red Stains - TV Static

TV Static is the new single from the latest incarnation of Manchester's most vocal toilet graffiti artists, a satirical view of the world around them tinged with a sense of desperation at the expectations placed on people in the digital age.

The John Hall Foundation Launch (Déjà Vega / The Goa Express / Yellow Brain / The Red Stains / Peacock Method / Maddy Storm / James Holt) - Manchester Band On The Wall / Rose And Monkey - 16th July 2022

John Hall was one of the most recognisable faces on the Manchester music scene, an omnipresent champion of new bands, unwavering in his support of those who got up on stage to perform and a will to only see the positive in artists. We sadly lost this magnificent man and friend last year to cancer, but before he passed he set up the John Hall Foundation to support the creation of safe working and rehearsal spaces for musicians in Manchester so that his legacy would never be forgotten, not that anyone who'd ever crossed his path would be able to forget him. Across two stages at Band On The Wall and the Rose And Monkey, artists and friends came together to raise funds and pay tribute on Saturday to a one-of-a-kind man whose loss has made the city's music scene a far poorer place.

Cro Cro Land, the London-based festival, headed North on Sunday for what was billed as "a day of explosive punk, rock and indie bands celebrating female and non-binary musicians" under the As The Cro Cro Flies banner in the basement of Retro. Headlined by Loose Articles, the line-up also featured a mix of local and out-of-town bands - I, Doris and Bugeye making their Manchester debuts as well as Macclesfield's Queen Cult and Manchester's adopted The Red Stains.

The Red Stains - Manchester Stage And Radio - 26th January 2022

The Red Stains' first gig of 2022 was an intimate affair in the makeshift venue of the basement of Stage And Radio on Port Street in Manchester's Northern Quarter. With a significant crowd already in for the opening band, their ten song set gave an exciting and thrilling reminder of their fascinating pop / punk crossover.

TRACK OF THE DAY : The Red Stains - Smile

The Red Stains return with their third single Smile!, a caustic biting retort at those who tell women to smile set to the musical chaos we've come to expect from the fledgling four-piece. It's a single that shows them finding their feet more as a band whilst retaining their unique sound and personality.

The very long delayed Manchester Psychfest took place on Saturday along the Oxford Road corridor with an expanded line-up of artists, many of whom have outgrown their original bookings giving the audience an opportunity to catch them in rooms they're unlikely to play in again. We caught bands from Goa Express's opening set in the Ritz to Billy Nomates' Deaf Institute (reviews by Jason Wynne up to and including bdrmm)

The Red Stains - Interview

The Red Stains are one of the most hotly-tipped new bands around and today they release their debut single Mannequin. Ferociously independent, vocal and visually striking on stage and on toilet walls around Manchester, they've captured the attention of the likes of Tim Burgess and Kendal Calling before even releasing a single on the back of some grainy demos and live tracks. We caught up with Natalie, Sterling and Ella for a chat about their origins, the graffiti, their uncompromising attitude and the pressures of expectation being placed on their shoulders.

TRACK OF THE DAY 1 : The Red Stains - Mother's Ruin (Live)

The Red Stains are one of the hottest most-talked about new bands in town at the moment, having secured a Kendal Calling appearance without a published record to their name. They precede the release of their as-yet-unannounced debut single in April with a couple of live tracks recorded at The Railway Inn in Didsbury last November on their Soundcloud. Mother's Ruin sees Natalie lament on how she's been a disappointment to her parents.

What really matters though is we think these twenty artists are great - and think you should check them out.
