Ramsbottom Festival Preview - Part Two

This weekend sees the fifth year of the Ramsbottom Festival, one of the most intimate and friendly festivals on the circuit. Set on the grounds of Ramsbottom Cricket Club, it attracts both national and local talent spread across a number of stages with something to appeal to most musical tastes. We're previewing the festival with a series of recommendations for artists to catch over the course of the three days. Part two today we look at John Bramwell, The Slow Readers Club, Louis Barrabas And The Bedlam Six, Flight Brigade and Heavy On The Magic.

JOHN BRAMWELL

John Bramwell is a Ramsbottom Festival veteran. As front man of I Am Kloot, he’s headlined the festival twice in its four years already and this year he’s back as a solo artist as his never ending tour of the UK kicks back into life. As well as intimate stripped-back versions of your favourite Kloot songs, you can expect plenty of  hilarious unscripted interaction with the audience and strange dark tales of drinking and disaster delivered with wit and intelligence as witnessed on his stunning Live At The Trades live album.

THE SLOW READERS CLUB

The Slow Readers Club are the best band in Manchester that you’ve never heard of (unless you read this blog regularly). Their recent album Cavalcade is full to the brim of electronic-driven anthems such as Forever In Your Debt, Start Again and forthcoming single Plant The Seed and they’ve been filling ever-growing venues in Manchester on the back of their burgeoning live reputation before their UK tour this autumn. If there were any justice, their next visit to Ramsbottom would have them headlining the main stage.

LOUIS BARRABAS AND THE BEDLAM SIX

Bedlam is an appropriate adjective to describe our next band. Once you've witnessed curly mustachioed front man Louis and his band of merry soldiers, you won't forget them. Since last year's album Youth they've been on a break while Louis writes a musical, so this Ramsbottom show is a rare chance to catch them act out their songs like their lives depend on it. Schizophrenic, mental and all over the place but somehow still absolutely brilliant, they promise an unmissable show full of their "lyric-driven dirt swing".

Louis Barrabas' website can be found here and he is also on Facebook and Twitter.

FLIGHT BRIGADE

Described to us excitedly by a friend as "the English Arcade Fire" after this weekend's set at Bestival, Flight Brigade bring their Stealing Fire tour to the festival. If lead track House Fire is anything to go by their brooding building songs will take Ramsbottom by storm and set them on the way to playing fields bigger than this next summer.

Flight Brigade's website can be found here. They are also on Facebook and Twitter.

HEAVY ON THE MAGIC

Heavy On The Magic can count the number of gigs they’ve played on one hand since they formed out of the ashes of Manchester’s much-loved The Minx who played the festival last year. With the effervescent energy and insistent charm of front man Chris Haddon allied to short, sharp musical punches to the sternum such as debut track Val Doonican Express they’re perfect for jumping around a festival field to.

Heavy On The Magic can be found on Facebook and Twitter. You can also get a free download of their cover of Devo's Gut Feeling by signing up to their mailing list.

The official Ramsbottom Festival website can be found here. Tickets are available on a day and weekend basis. The festival is also on Facebook and Twitter.
