Ist Ist return with Stamp You Out, the first track from their third album
Protagonists that they have also announced today. Already a live favourite,
and recollecting the raw energy of their early singles combined with the power
and control of their more recent work, the song is a thrilling return for one
of Manchester's successful but often overlooked bands.
With their biggest headline show to date announced for The Ritz and other
dates in the pipeline to capitalise on their growing support around the
country and abroad where they sold out two shows in Rotterdam, one in seconds,
the other in twelve hours, Amsterdam, Berlin and Hamburg recently, 2023
promises to be Ist Ist's strongest year yet. The release of their third album
Protagonists seems set to expand on the top 100 album success of The Art Of
Lying and the top three indie chart position of their debut Architecture.
Stamp You Out is raw and punishing, a statement of intent and anger from a
band that started as a primal post-punk band but have developed into one with
an almost clinical control of the pace and intensity of their songs whilst
opening themselves up to a more radio-friendly sound that echoes some of their
influences, but which very much wear the Ist Ist stamp of authenticity all
over them.
Front man Adam Houghton explains more about the song and its genesis - "It
tips its hat to the previous Ist Ist where the modus operandi was to try and
make an impact in the most forceful way; pounding drums and bass and
repetitive lyrics. I remember watching a news report where a politician,
whose name I forget, just kept saying: ‘we need to stamp this out’. I was
thinking ‘we need to stamp you out’, so I wrote an aggressive fight song and
a call to arms about it.”
The single is accompanied by an official video that sees the band performing
against a flurry of incandescent lights. Bassist Andy Keating explains the
thought process behind the video - "We felt like the track is a
straightforward rock song which required a straightforward video and we
didn’t want to
over-embellish the visual aspect. For existing Ist Ist fans, it re-affirms
what we’re all about, and for anyone new it tells you everything you need to
know."
Protagonists, as well as previous physical releases, can be ordered via their website. Digital versions of their previous limited edition releases and a number of live field recordings are available to download from their Bandcamp.
Ist Ist play London Islington O2 Academy 2 (November 3), Birmingham The Rainbow (4), Hebden Bridge Trades Club (25, sold out) and Manchester Ritz (March 31).
