Proletariat - Interview

Proletariat image by Trust A Fox

Dial back two years and Proletariat were on many people's lists as the next band to break out of Manchester and then, almost overnight, they announced a split and disappeared. Now they're back, with a new line-up, a powerful new single Go Ahead and a new approach to what they do best. We caught up with front man James for a chat about what happened and what's going to be different in 2021 for Proletariat.

Lanterns On The Lake - The Realist EP

The Realist EP is a collection of songs that didn't quite fit on Lanterns On The Lake's Mercury-nominated album Spook The Herd - four new previously unreleased songs and a radically different Model City version of the album track Baddies. Whilst the tracks might not have fitted on the album, that's absolutely not an indicator of inferior quality - and the EP provides a broader view into the creative processes of the Spook The Herd sessions.

James - Live In Extraordinary Times

James have released their first live video since 2002's Getting Away With It Live DVD of one of their December 2001 farewell shows in Live In Extraordinary Times. The DVD (included as part of a deluxe photobook edition) and digital download capture highlights of shows in Philadelphia and Madrid in summer 2019 as part of their tour in support of their Living In Extraordinary Times album whilst the live album across 2cd, vinyl and digital also contains songs from their Manchester Arena show in 2018. With more than half the tracks across the package coming from their last three albums, it's a living document of a band unafraid to push the envelope and refuse to rest on their laurels.

TRACK OF THE DAY : The Red Stains - Freezer Jesus

The Red Stains return with their second single, live favourite Freezer Jesus, and their first ever video that captures both the wild lyrics of the song and the chaos that seems to follow the band around wherever they go.

Ist Ist / Gravediggers Union - Live From The Attic

Live From The Attic was the first opportunity for people to hear Ist Ist's debut album Architecture played live in its entirety with the addition of a few old favourites and the first airing of a brand-new track from the sessions for their second record. The self-released album hit number three in the independent charts in May against the odds and has consistently won new admirers since. Yet as the evening was to prove, Ist Ist are at their most formidable in the live environment even without an audience present as they deliver an alternate version of the songs from Architecture that will cement its place in the hearts of those whose path it has crossed.

TRACK OF THE DAY : Loose Articles - Up The Disco

Loose Articles return with their first single since last year's Orchard Lounge EP. Up The Disco is a riotous barrel of fun that doesn't take itself too serious accompanied by a music video that follows in the same vein.

Katherine Priddy - Interview

Katherine Priddy has been an artist on our radar since we caught her set at the much-missed A Carefully Planned Festival in Manchester in October 2016. Her 2018 EP Wolf was one of our favourites of the year and she finishes 2020 with a new single Still Winter Still Waiting. We caught up with her for a chat about the track, working with other musicians, her place on the English Folk Expo mentoring programme and hopes for 2021.
