LIINES / Hungry - Manchester Gorilla - 20th April 2024

Saturday night saw LIINES and Hungry, two very different bands but with a common hit them hard philosophy, take to the stage at Gorilla in support of House Of All to impress a packed crowd.

Hungry open up the evening and leave an impressive mark on a growing crowd including their own mosh pit down the front. They're an articulate intelligent band, as evidenced by their t-shirt that lists a range of historic events as well as their name in multiple languages, and from the start they go for the jugular, led by Jacob, a front man of imposing presence and manner and a voice that commands the stage and the audience's attention. Over the course of half an hour they confirm the positive whispers we've heard about them as they've worked their way through Manchester's grassroots venues from support slots to their own headlines and place themselves firmly at the top of our list of new bands in the city to keep an eye out on.

LIINES of course are not new kids on the block, although in many ways they're starting again, recently announcing that they've signed off the masters of their first new music for a couple of years, as well as playing a set that heavily features unreleased songs. With Ding Archer on bass joining core members Zoe (vocals / guitar) and Leila (drums) they go down a storm with an audience here for a band made up of former members of The Fall. Technical problems can't derail the energy they put into the set, delivering ten songs in just over twenty five minutes. Zoe's rasping vocals fit the likes of Sorry, Always The Same and Never Wanted This perfectly and Leila's relentless drumming so forceful that she's forced out of her seat at the end of a couple of songs. Never There is still the equal of most independently released singles in the last ten years, but now sits mid-set whilst These Days marks itself out to be a future single from their long-awaited second album. The roar at the end of the set tells us LIINES have reminded those that know them just how great they are and won over new admirers.

LIINES played Shallow, Go, Keep On Going, Always The Same, Never There, Never Wanted This, These Days, Blackout, Sorry and Wait.
