Just Mustard / Cruel Sister - Newcastle The Grove - 21st April 2026

Just Mustard are currently on tour in support of their second album We Were Just Here which they released at the end of 2025. Gillian Heal caught up with their show in Newcastle.

This 5 piece band from Dundalk, Ireland are playing an extensive European, UK, Ireland and US/Canadian tour. They played at The Grove based in Ouseburn, a cool urban suburb of Newcastle. The Grove is an on-trend independent multi-use venue with a great tap bar and tasty scran. The place was packed with a really satisfying mix of young and older fans. The atmosphere was one of expectant anticipation; the room was dark and smoky, and we were ready for the haunting sounds to begin.

Supporting them tonight was another Irish band, Cruel Sister, who were loud, shouty and ready to show us what they could do. Faith Nico’s sound has the shoegaze element with a good dose of grunge alt/rock and some angst thrown in for good measure. The bass was great throughout and I loved the intros and repeated tones. The rhythms were clever and along with guitars, drums and sampled noises, it was a hit with me and the rest of the audience.

Just Mustard are touring with their latest 2025 album, We Were Just Here. The title track has a more melodic electronic sound and my favourite, Endless Deathless is a powerful noisy track with Katie’s haunting vocals and industrial noises running through it.

There was an excited buzz amongst the crowd while we waited for the band to come on stage. Someone let out a few amusing yelps while the warm up music raised the tempo! They played a massive fifteen tracks across their four albums/EP.

The dreamlike haunting vocals and experimental clever guitars and samples are paired with the almost ceremonial drums, which is an audible dispute that keeps you hooked. Playing in this venue created a sonic experience that totally embodied the audience.

They create a sound that is almost scary and certainly haunting. It evokes feelings of a tense hypnotic noir drama, which would not go amiss in an A24 horror film. It makes me think of a nightmarish haunted doll coming awake at night - great stuff indeed!

The cacophony they produce is extraordinary and so intriguing to hear. The scratches and echoing blaring sounds felt almost like being in a wind tunnel with vibrations and strobe lighting. Such a sound that goes so deep and vibrates through the body.

Silver has great drums and a manipulating guitar and bass creating harsh feedback sounds. There are lots of layers on Seven with the shrieks and other strange evocative industrial sounds. Somewhere is soft and slow with Katie’s haunting dreamlike vocals and complimentary harmonies by David.

The bass is brilliant on Out Of Heaven taken from the new album and then Deaf along with David’s supporting harmony which ends in what I feel was overdrive and further feedback.

New album track Dandelion shows that Just Mustard can get lost in the moment of their music - playing trance-like individually, but coming together hypnotically as one.

They finished the set with We Were Just Here then finally Seed which was an explosion of sound with punches and waves of noise. It’s so intelligent and skilful the way Robert on bass, and Mete and David on guitar are shaping and warping guitar sounds; delivering it in such a way to evoke strong emotions. I left with ears ringing and a big smile on my face!
