Describing herself as "a mix of folk, pop and soul", Emily Mercer's new single Gallery is a gorgeous piano-driven track that hides a darker side lyrically that contrasts with the warmth and openness of the music.
The track was recorded as we entered lockdown with Emily's band in Leeds with the vocals recorded at Emily's adopted home of Manchester. It starts with just piano and vocals, reminiscent of Rae Morris's very earliest work, building slowly aided by the expressive nature of Emily's crystal clear voice and the song's unfussy production until the band kicks in with dramatic effect.
Emily explains the meaning behind the song which deals in the universal sense that others seem to be in control of their lives and direction when your own thoughts are confused and full of doubt - "Gallery is about a loss of control. It looks at intrusive thoughts, imposter syndrome and the uncertainty of feeling that everyone else has it sorted."
