James - Cleveland Agora Theatre - 19th July 2019

James' North American tour continued last week with a show in Cleveland Ohio. As is the nature of their sets, they turned the previous night on its head and came out with a very different looking line up of songs. IKWIHF reports back.

It would seem that after the uncertain reception of songs from the new album the previous night in Buffalo, James have decided to turns things upside down tonight and come out and play six different songs during their twelve song set in oven temperature hot Cleveland. Only three of tonight’s songs are found on the Living In Extraordinary Times album.

James rise to the challenge of playing in the Republican heartland of the rustbelt, and deliver a well played set. It is a challenge though: the introduction of politically charged new song Heads by Tim is met with some howls of disapproval from the audience. It is certainly a tightrope act for James tonight. It also doesn’t help that the Cleveland audience are noticeably older and a larger number of them than in previous nights are out to see the Psychedelic Furs. That’s just luck of the draw though when you have co-headlining bands from two different decades on tour together.

There are a few nice surprises in the setlist tonight, including the percussive live favourite Stutter, To My Surprise from the Girl at the end of the World, and Busted from last year’s Better Than That EP.

Setlist closer Many Faces is again met with a mixed response, with younger audience members greeting it enthusiastically whereas many older attendees don’t seem too certain about it. But James pull it all together by closing the night with Laid, which seems to make everybody happy.

James played Dream Thrum, To My Surprise, Born of Frustration, Nothing But Love, Busted, What's It All About, Heads, Sometimes, Come Home, Stutter, Many Faces and Laid
