Purple Heart Parade - A Minute's Silence At Weatherfield County

With new material due soon on a new label (AC30), Manchester's Purple Heart Parade remind us of their past with a new download only compilation EP, with three previously available tracks getting their first digital release and a live track included too.

Purple Heart Parade have been darlings of the Manchester psychedelic scene for a few years now.  I doubt there will be a better titled EP this year - The A Minute's Silence In Weatherfield County EP gets underway with Painting Pictures. Pounding drums and maximum reverb greet us on Painting Pictures, Purple Heart Parade give us a big and expansive sound, not unlike that of Even The Stars favourites Neon Waltz.

Drifter is a much more mellower affair and for me the highlight of the EP.  Each member of the band seem to occupy their own space but come together to create a beautiful yet simplistic soundscape.

Starfucker Blues is a live favourite and set closer. A Hammond driven classic, it’s an unashamedly 60s psych groove that Purple Heart Parade create. There's a touch of Spacemen 3’s Revolution to the bass too.

A live recording of Spirit World rounds off the EP and is in the same vein as Painting Pictures, although this is a much more chilled out affair.

This EP is a great introduction to the band for those who have yet to catch up. It leaves me eager to catch them live again, an environment in which they have been thriving.

Purple Heart Parade's website can be found here.  They are also on Facebook and Twitter.

The EP is available on Bandcamp, iTunes, Spotify and Amazon.

They play shows at Glasgow Broadcast (March 24), Dundee Conroy's Basement (25) before supporting The Lucid Dream at London Dalston Victoria (April 5).
