Us - Interview

A singer from a late 90s band that got lumped in with the Britpop phenomenon and a Swedish producer and director may not seem like the most obvious musical companions, but Us's debut album First Contact shows that we shouldn't jump to such hasty conclusions. We caught up with the singer, Geneva's Andrew Montgomery, for a chat about how Us came into being, their writing processes and the way in which they present their art.

Geneva - Edinburgh Wee Red Bar - 1st February 2019

"This one's called Further, we're going to go further" Andrew Montgomery towards the end of Geneva's first live show since May 2000. Geneva - Interview

Geneva were one of the most underrated bands of their time, caught in the backlash of Britpop around the turn of the century, guilty by association, despite not fitting into that scene at all. Their second album Weather Underground was hampered by financial meltdown at their label which destroyed any chance of it following their debut Further, which yielded four top forty singles, into the top twenty. The band inevitably called it a day soon after with a lot of unfinished business. They return next week for two very low-key shows in Edinburgh and London before taking part in the Starshaped Festival in September. We caught up with front man Andrew Montgomery to discuss the reunion and future plans.

TRACK OF THE DAY : Us - Mute

Mute is the second single from Stockholm-based electronic duo Us. The voice might be familiar though - it's Andrew Montgomery, formerly of Geneva and Amityville and who released his solo album Ruled By Dreams a few years back. His voice is unmistakable and the sparse electronic backing allows him to really demonstrate his command of range and ability to use it to express emotions in a way that many singers simply don't possess the tools to.

Andrew Montgomery - Chester The Compass - 7th April 2015

Back in the heady days of late 1990s Britpop, one band stood out from the crowd because of the voice of their front man - Andrew Montgomery. Geneva, hampered by the press backlash at the second wave of bands and the financial meltdown of their label Nude, released two stunning albums Further and Weather Underground. Andrew released his debut solo album Ruled By Dreams last year and we caught the final date of his UK tour at The Compass in Chester.
