The Slow Readers Club have released Killing Me, their third single from their forthcoming The Joy Of The Return album due out on March 20th. It's an upbeat commentary on the state of modern society with a critical eye on who runs the world and the collective apathetic silence to it.
Killing Me is a damning reflection on the state of modern society, the people who make the decisions and drive agendas sitting well away from the impact ("the kings sit pride of place far above the chaos") and the way humans are tied to machines for interaction ("I'm a slave to technology, talk through the glass"). There's a sense of anger and frustration at the way no one is challenging this situation, the social disparities in the world going unaddressed ("wretched injustice has swallowed me whole") and the way there is no one making a stand and their voice heard in opposition ("silence is killing me, driving me mad").
Front man Aaron Starkie said of Killing Me "Killing Me is a song about inequality, “It’s about being controlled by a ruling class, and how we’ve designed a system of living for ourselves that’s a kind of prison, emotionally and spiritually. It’s about a world where we increasingly isolate ourselves through an addiction to our phones and social media."
The Joy Of The Return is released on March 20 on CD, cassette, standard magenta vinyl, band-store only magenta vinyl with black splatter and a limited to 400 Dinked edition clear vinyl with magenta splatter that also contains a unique signed art print. There are also test pressings and album t-shirts available as part of bundles on the official store.
