TRACK OF THE DAY : The Maitlands - Where Did It All Go Wrong?

The Maitlands return with their second single of the year - and their first with new keyboard player Wimmy - the brooding Where Did It All Go Wrong? Following up from their excellent January single Painting In Carlisle, The Maitlands have just released the equally impressive and somewhat prophetic Where Did It All Go Wrong?

Last year’s stunning Bury The Hatchet EP was described on this very blog as a “game changer” and with Where Did It All Go Wrong? the band have kept up the high standards displayed there by producing another winner.

You get a real warmth when listening to Manchester six piece The Maitlands. Their brand of intelligent pop resonates with many. Wordsmith Carl Ingram’s vocals are commanding from the off. Like some of their output from last year, Where Did It All Go Wrong? is a reflective tale with Carl lamenting our world where we’ve been replaced by machines and reliance on the daily use of narcotics to get by. “This is your hook now, getting photoshopped out of control” warns Carl. Carl’s words are augmented from keyboard maestro Wimmy who makes a welcome return in his first outing since The Rainkings.

Where Did It All Go Wrong? builds and builds, powered along by an impressive rhythm section of Matt Byrne and Saul Gerrard and it should help them reach an even wider audience. Their momentum has steadily been gathering pace in the last eighteen months thanks in part to their growing reputation as a live band. Covid has put that on hold but Where Did It All Go Wrong? Should help them maintain their profile as one of Manchester’s most promising and exciting bands.
