TRACK OF THE DAY : Ist Ist - Mary In The Black And White Room

Ist Ist have released Mary In The Black And White Room, the second track to be taken from their forthcoming album Protagonists which is due for release in March 2023. A more synth-driven track than the album's opening release Stamp You Out, it will both delight long-term fans of the band and give an insight into the progression of their sound on their third record.

The song is inspired by a thought experiment proposed by the philosopher Frank Jackson that has since become known as ‘the knowledge argument’ (or ‘Mary's room’) Ist Ist's front man Adam Houghton explains further - "Mary in the Black and White Room is about trying to figure out if experience trumps knowledge. See the Knowledge Argument where the subject, Mary, exists in a black and white world but has extensive descriptions of colour, but you don’t know if she knows what they actually look like until exposed to it. Really interesting stuff."

The lyric video, directed by Shaolin Pete, captures the mood of the song perfectly, starting off in black and white and then bursting into the colour as the song takes off and the lyrical references to seeing things in colour rather than in monotone kick in.
