Dave Haslam - Interview

As part of the Manchester International Festival celebrations in July, Dave Haslam has been asked to curate four nights of free live music at the festival hub outside the Town Hall in Albert Square. He's chosen Horace Andy, The Orielles, Working Men's Club, The Blinders, Witch Fever, The Pagans SOH, LIINES, and Sink Ya Teeth as part of an exciting diverse line-up. We caught up with Dave for a chat about how he curated the line up and why he's so excited about the acts he's picked.

Dave told us "I’ve booked some DJs to play Festival (Albert) Square during Manchester International Festival, including the Black Madonna; and also I’m hosting four nights of live music. It’s a buzz to get to choose the artists, an honour in fact. The best thing is that we have arranged all these as free entry; the performers will be in a big covered tent on the Square, and there will be no advanced tickets and no admission charge.

Yes; these ace acts all for free! Music for the people!

Gigs start at 8pm."

The schedule runs as follows :

Sunday 14th - Horace Andy / Blood And Fire
Monday 15th - The Orielles / Working Men's Club
Tuesday 16th - The Blinders / Witch Fever / The Pagans SOH
Wednesday 17th - LIINES / Sink Ya Teeth

Dave talked us through the bands on the line up and the reasons he chose them.

HORACE ANDY / BLOOD AND FIRE

"Blood & Fire are a mini-collective who play just the best (mostly dub) reggae - Dom from Blood & Fire has a brilliant sandwich shop in Stockport as well, but maybe that's by-the-by. To partner them up with the great Jamaican roots reggae singer Horace Andy - who people might know from his collaborations with Massive Attack, if not his solo stuff - just seemed perfect, and for a Sunday too. He'll be on the microphone, they'll be doing their stuff. A great vibe guaranteed."

THE ORIELLES

"I've been a big fan of The Orielles for a while, their energy onstage is brilliant. Sometimes they hit a groove you just don't want them to stop. Their album on Heavenly Silver Dollar Moment rightly won them plaudits. They have a loopy, looping, increasingly electronic sound. I asked them to play and now they've decided to premiere a whole lot of their new stuff in their set, which makes me even more excited."

WORKING MEN'S CLUB

Working Men's Club seem to be on lots of people's radars as "the ones to watch". I heard their single Bad Blood earlier this year, angular, direct, post-punk I guess, but also something a little Parquet Courts about them. They're from Todmorden, have a great attitude, hate the right wing media, love The Fall."

Working Men's Club are on Facebook and Twitter.

They play Manchester Band On The Wall (June 14, supporting WH Lung), Leeds Brudenell Social Club Heavenly Weekender (15), Halifax Piece Hall (28, supporting Mac Demarco), Bluedot Festival (July 18-21), St German's Port Eliot Festival (25-28), Hebden Bridge Trades Club (August 11, with Bodega), Edinburgh Summerhall (12, with Bodega), Newcastle Riverside (13, with Bodega), Birkenhead Future Yard Festival (14, with Bodega), Brighton Concorde 2 (27, with Bodega) and Birmingham Hare And Hounds (28, with Bodega).

THE BLINDERS

"The Blinders will storm the Festival Square stage I am sure. I chased and chased them; they have a busy schedule, and lots of people asking them to do stuff. But I didn't give up! I couldn't make their recent gig at the Ritz but the feedback and reviews I read from that made it sound amazing. A piece of that unhinged Blinders magic for free, live in front of the Town Hall. Imagine!"

The Blinders' website can be found here and they are on Facebook and Twitter.

Our recent interview with them can be found here and we covered their headline show at Manchester's Ritz back in April here.

They play Stockport Edgeley Park (June 22, with Blossoms), Exeter Sunday Sessions (30, with Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds), Brighton Concorde 2 (July 4, with Miles Kane), Lithuania Devilstone Festival (July 11), Haarlem Kliko Festival (13), Nijmegen Valkhof Festival (14), Benicassim Festival (19), Lisbon Super Bock Festival (20), Hull Humber Street Sesh (August 2), Blackburn Night At The Museum (8, acoustic), Beautiful Days Festival Devon (18), Bingley Weekender (31), Blackburn Confessional (September 6), London Gunnersbury Park (7, with The Specials), Amsterdam Paradiso Indiestad (19), Portsmouth Dials Festival (October 5), Cardiff Shimmer Sounds Festival (November 16) and Birmingham Shimmer Sounds Festival (17).

WITCH FEVER

"I saw Witch Fever at Fuel in Withington and they impressed me so much. I told them I thought they were like a cross between Black Sabbath and the Slits. They're about twenty years old so those bands were way before their time, but they liked the description well enough to put in their press bio. So it must be true! They are heavy and incendiary. Looking around other bands in Manchester, I'd say singer Amy is currently one of THE great performers of 2019."

THE PAGANS SOH

"I've probably thrown too much at this Tuesday gig but I really wanted to find room for The Pagans SOH. A young Black Country gang, wonderful live, fusing a hardcore sound with a proper groove and another great performer upfront; the brilliant Marco."

LIINES

"Last year I took LIINES to play in Italy; the venue wanted me to choose the most important emerging band in Manchester, and, for me, LIINES fit that description. And if you get to "curate" some nights, you pick your favourites, that's how it should be. Bands you feel passionate about and want to give some kind of platform too. LIINES have such momentum behind them now, coming off the back of a huge tour supporting Sleaford Mods, and a new single called On and On."

LIINES' official website can be found here.  They are also on TwitterFacebook and Soundcloud. They play shows with Bis in October at London Boston Music Rooms (10), Manchester Night And Day (11) and Glasgow Mono (13) after festival shows at Kendal Calling (July 26), Cotton Clouds Festival (August 17) and Blackburn Confessional Festival (September 6).

Our recent interview with LIINES can be found here and we reviewed their recent show at Manchester's Yes here.

SINK YA TEETH

"Norwich-based female duo, Sink Ya Teeth produce a fabulous post-punk, electronic funk crossover sound, and are very strong lyrically. They’ve played several gigs supporting A Certain Ratio; which makes perfect sense. Jez Kerr from ACR is going to DJ after the MIF show, which is excellent news."

They play London Corsica Studios (August 22).
